This is the radio station Howard Stern is on.

First time I have seen Venus since it flipped sides

Venus is called both the Morning Star and the Evening Star.

That is probably because Venus looks like the brightest star in the sky and is only seen in the morning or evening.

Because Venus is one of the planets that has an orbit inside Earth's orbit you could see Venus in the daytime, but the bright sun makes that impossible so you can only see Venus in the morning on evening.

Venus is either visible in the morning or evening, but not both.

For months Venus was visible in the morning. The a few months ago it disappeared.

This is the first time I have seen Venus since it reappeared in the evening.

I suspect that Venus will again be visible for a few months in the evening until it flips back and reverts to being the morning star.

Cold weather is around the corner???

When I woke up this morning it was almost cool.

I don't even think I put my sweatshirt on.

Even though it's warm and I don't need a sweatshirt I wear one to keep the bugs off of me and also to keep my arms from getting cut up when I wander around in the desert at night.

I also wear shoes and long pants for the same reason, even though I really don't need to wear either of them because it's warm out at night.

Maybe it's the clouds that are making it cool.

Right now it's pretty cloudy outside.

Also this morning it was cloudy when I got up.

The first thing I did when I got up was search for Venus in the sky, but I couldn't find it because of the clouds.

A little while later a few holes poked in the clouds and I saw Venus for a few minutes.

Don't get all excited. Sheriff Joe won't go to jail for his crimes. Nor will Sheriff Joe get any big fines.

I suspect the most that will happen is Sheriff Joe will get a weak slap on the wrist and be ordered by a wimpy judge to obey the law.

July 20 - One weird night

It's hot out there

But it was real humid. And of course that made it feel a lot hotter then it really was.

When I went to bed I was sweating like a pig with water literally all over me.

After sleeping a while I figured it might be dangerous if I slept in the hot place I was so I went outside and found a place in the desert to sleep.

Man it was a lot cooler there.

I stepped on a scorpion

As I was walking thru he desert I saw what looked like a dead leaf and I tried to step on it.

I missed. Well I probably didn't miss, but the dead leaf moved out of my way.

The dead leaf turned out to be a live scorpion, maybe an inch long.

When I tried to step on it, the scorpion was curled up and looked like a dead leaf.

But after that the scorpion spread out it's legs and had it's stinger coiled like scorpions usually do and it looked like a scorpion, not a dead leaf.

I guess that is one more reason I should wear my shoes when I am out in the desert.

If I had not been wearing shoes the scorpion would probably have stung me when I thought it was a dead leaf and tried to step on it.

I played some silly games with the scorpion and stomped my foot next to it several times.

And of course each time the scorpion would move away from me.

I usually don't play games with poisonous animals or reptiles, but for some reason I was playing games with the this little scorpion.

Eventually I got bored and left the scorpion and continue my walk.

And yes I let the scorpion live.

Some Rain Too

Not rain, but microscopic bits of rain.

Even thought it rain was microscopic it felt good and I prayed for more rain.

Eventually the microscopic rain drops turned into large drops of rain and it started raining good enough to actually get me wet, but not soaking wet.

I then left my outside area and went back to the original area I was sleeping because I did not want to get wet. And even more important I didn't want the cardboard I was sleeping on to get soaking wet and ruined.

By that time it was cool enough that I wasn't sweating like a pig.

I slept till 4:22 which is a little late for a week day, but OK for a Saturday.

Remember I wear glasses and in the middle of the night I though it was a monster centipede or millipede.

It scared the krap out of me. I used my sweatshirt to throw the critter out of my sleeping.

A little while later the critter came back a second time and made a lot of noise and scared the krap out of me again.

That time I killed the critter by stepping on it.

When I woke up at 4:22 am I discovered it was a large cockroach. Oddly by that time the ants had discovered it as a source of food and it was covered with ants.

I threw the dead cockroach away a few hundred feed away from my campsite to keep the ants from bugging me.

Phoenix-area dust storm causes power outages

A dust storm Saturday caused outages in the Valley and prompted drivers to pull off the roadway.

SRP reported 9,000 customers were without power due to outages caused by winds. That number has since dropped to fewer than 2,000. SRP expected all customers to have power restored by midnight.

APS reported a few scattered outages across the Valley. Service to downtown Glendale was restored after a short outage. Service was interrupted for 1,081 Ajo customers and 611 Morristown customers, according to APS. Power was restored shortly to Morristown and fewer than 15 customers in Ajo were still without power.

The chance for thunderstorms will continue through the rest of the weekend into early next week, the weather service reported.

Thunderstorm activity will vary in intensity and location from day to day. Some drying from the west is expected by Wednesday.

High temperatures are expected to remain near or slightly below normal through mid week before slowly rising by Thursday.

In Pinal County Saturday, law enforcement reported cars pulled off to the side of the road due to zero visibility.

Winds gusted to 45 mph, prompting a dust storm warning that ended at 6 p.m.

Visibility dropped to one-quarter of a mile with some areas down to zero visibility, according to meteorologist Valerie Meyers of the National Weather Service in Phoenix.

Meyers said rain was anticipated to shortly follow the dust storm Saturday night.

"There are all kinds of thunder storms developing behind the dust and yes, we are looking at some showers and thunder storms probably encroaching on the area after the wind and dust come through," Meyers said.

Meyers said if the rain persist over an area there could be some ponding of water in low-lying areas but no widespread flash flooding.

Mesa cops making lots of bogus drug DUI arrests

In Arizona if you have any microscopic, but measurable trace of an illegal drug in you system, even if it isn't impairing your driving you are considered guilty of DUI.

So a drug test almost certainly will insure that the cops get a conviction if the case goes to court.

Which leads me to think that the Mesa police are using real flimsy evidence to stop and arrest people for DUI, and that flimsy evidence probably won't hold up in court.

And of course that is why the Mesa cops need to do a drug test to get a conviction.

I suspect this is also about revenue. In Arizona as many other places arresting people for DUI is a big source of money for the police and government.

These drug tests will probably get a lot more convictions and bring in a lot more revenue to the city of Mesa.

Weekend storms could pass through the Valley for the third consecutive weekend as a storm system builds up strength and creates a slight chance for showers Saturday through Monday.

The Valley's best chance for thunderstorms will come Sunday night into Monday morning, but even then the National Weather Service is only predicting about a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms.

Phoenix residents are more likely to experience a hot, muggy weekend than one chock-full of the traditional monsoon rain, thunder and lightning.

The East Valley would be the first to see rain as the storm makes its way though the state to California on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

Despite the storm system moving through, the Valley will only see a slight dip in temperatures.

Highs are expected to reach 107 Friday, 105 Saturday and then 102 Sunday before creeping back up to 103 and 104 on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures could reach 110 again by the end of next week, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight lows for the weekend and start of the work week with hover around the mid-80s.
