A group of business leaders on Thursday delivered signatures to the Glendale City Clerk's Office in hopes of getting a measure on the November ballot to reverse a sales-tax hike approved by the City Council.

Organizers of the group, Save Glendale Now, delivered 4,138 signatures, which is nearly twice the amount needed. City and Maricopa County election staff now must review the petitions and determine by July 24 whether there are enough valid signatures.

The initiative aims to repeal the 0.7 percentage-point tax hike and require voter approval of future sales-tax increases.

The increase is expected to begin in August and bring in an estimated $23 million this fiscal year. The council banked on the increase to help close a projected $35 million operating shortfall.

Business leaders supporting the initiative say the tax hike disregarded a fragile economy, while some council leaders say the increase was necessary to avoid drastic service cuts.
