Ted Werner thinks light rail is on strong financial footing!!!
In this letter to the editor Ted Werner of Mesa thinks light rail is cost effective??? "The combination of Power Road and Gateway would put that line on strong financial footing and prepare the way for a freeway-oriented line" I bet Ted Werner doesn't know that every time you hop on light rail and pay $1.75 for a ride it costs the government something like $15 to provide the service. Look Ted, if you think that a business that loses $13.25 every time somebody rides on their train is on strong financial footing I have some land in Florida I would like to sell you. Letter: Extend light rail in streets Idea for light-rail line As a Mesa frequent rider of the buses and light rail, including air trips via the Sky Harbor light rail/bus combination, I am impressed by the significance of your inquiry ("Should light-rail extensions continue on city streets or move to freeways?" Aug. 4). The freeway alignment in the west along I-10 seems to me to be a different issue than in Mesa. Vice Mayor Somers’ conclusion about the goals is absolutely correct. My vote would be to extend light rail along Main to Power and then along Power to Gateway. If the use of that light-rail line indicates a freeway-oriented line to Gateway would be financially feasible, then that should be installed as a second choice. My impression remains that the passengers on the buses are quite different from light-rail passengers. I believe Power Road would be a strong draw for a light rail, and it would be in effect for most of the day. The combination of Power Road and Gateway would put that line on strong financial footing and prepare the way for a freeway-oriented line. — Ted Werner, Mesa |
